Athlete Of The Month – August

Togher AC athlete Robert Heffernan is the Cork City Sports athlete of the month for August 2016. Robert travelled to Rio to compete in his fifth olympic games to compete in the 50K race walk. The race was a gruelling event in the Brazilian heat and humidity in which 30% of the athletes were unable to finish the 50K distance. Robert finished 6th in a time of 3:43:55.

Robert has a remarkable Olympic record since making his debut in Sydney in 2000. He finished 8th in the 20km in Beijing in 2008, 9th in the 20km and third in the 50km in London 2012, and fifth in the 50km in Rio.

This is Robert’s seventh Cork City Sports Star of the Month award, having last received the award in October 2014. Robert was also recipient of the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Year award for 2014.

The Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month Awards are sponsored by Cork’s 96FM & C103, The River Lee, The Evening Echo and LeisureWorld.
