There was a breakthrough performance from long jumper Jeffery Henderson on the final day of the US Championships in Sacramento, California on last Sunday.
Prior to this weekend, Henderson’s personal best stood at 8.33m, but in the sweltering conditions – with temperatures exceeding 38°C – the 25-year-old leapt beyond that in all three of his measured jumps, his best effort of 8.52m coming in the final round.
Competing against Henderson will be Fabrice Lapierre, the 2010 World Indoor Championships Long Jump gold medallist 8.40 PB and fellow USA athlete Ronald Taylor Jr also an 8m plus long jumper.
This high standard is sure to help the Irish athletes, so big jumps are expected all around.
