At an award ceremony in the River Lee Hotel, Leevale AC Senior Men team were presented with the Cork City Sports Athlete of the month award for August. The event is sponsored by 96&C103FM, The Evening Echo and The River Lee hotel.
Leevale men’s team secured victory in the National League Final premier men’s contest. This is the first time in 38 years since Leevale or any Cork team last won the National League title.
There were fine performances produced by Luke Hickey (walk), Mark Hanrahan (1500m), Sam Healy (HJ & LJ), David Quilligan (100m & 200m), Ben Thistlewood (5000m), James Heffernan (Hammer) and David Tierney (Shot Putt & 56lbs) to secure victory with a score of 116 points. The score placed them seven points ahead of St. Abban’s AC who were second on 109 points with Clonliffe Harriers in third on 105 points. This squad have now qualified to represent Ireland at the European Club Competition next year.
Pat Moore (javelin), was also a member of the last Leevale teams to win the Leagues 40 years ago.
This Leevale men’s team achieved a unique double this year winning the inaugural Indoor National Senior T&F league & the National Senior T&F league.
