At a ceremony in the River Lee Hotel, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald and County Mayor Cllr Declan Hurley launched the 2017 Cork City Sports. Now in its 66th year, takes place at the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) Athletic Stadium, Bishopstown, Cork on Tuesday evening, 18th July at 5.30pm and will feature a host of leading international athletes from around the world.
Leading Irish athletes who will compete are; Cork’s own national champion Phil Healy, whose international debut came in the European indoors in Belgrade last March; John Travers, who finished seventh in the 1500m at the 2015 European Indoors in Prague; European Junior silver medalist Sarah Lavin; plus Irish international athletes Timmy Crowe, long-jumper Adam McMullen, Sam Healy and Craig Lynch.
Among the top international athletes to feature in Cork will be, Olympic 400m hurdles bronze-medalist and twice World Championship silver-medalist Javier Culson of Puerto Rico, Raymond Gittens of Barbados, Ghanaian athletes Flings Owusu-Acheampong and Gemma Acheampong – with eight African Championship medals between them – while double Olympic finalist Collis Bermingham accompanies fellow Australian athletes Patrick Tiernan, Jordy Williamsz.
In the high jump Jamal Wilson BAH, Mike Edwards GBR are sure to put on a spectacle, both athletes with season bests of 2.23m has the making of a great competition. While in the long jump there are a number of 8 meter plus athletes to excite the crowd, including Goa Xinglong of China and Corey Crawford USA .
This year Cork City Sports will return to live television, when the legendary athletics meeting is broadcast live on TG4, to commence a multi-year deal. It will also be TG4’s first ever live athletics broadcast, having featured highlights of the All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships from 2004 to 2010. The event will available to audiences across the world on TG4 Player and live stream on the Cork City Sports website.
