The Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month Awards proudly recognise three outstanding athletes for their remarkable performances this past summer. Sponsored by The River Lee Hotel, Cork’s 96 & 103FM, and The Echo, these awards celebrate the best of Cork’s sporting talent across all levels.
July Athlete of the Month: Eoin O’Callaghan (Bandon AC) Eoin O’Callaghan claimed the July title after an outstanding performance at the European Under 18 Championships in Slovakia, where he competed in the decathlon. In a stellar showing, Eoin surpassed the 7000-point mark for the first time, achieving six personal bests and setting a new Irish Under 18 record. His dedication and skill have established him as one of Ireland’s most promising young athletes in multi-discipline events.
August Athlete of the Month: Sean Carmody (Leevale AC) The August award goes to Sean Carmody, whose dominance in the 110m hurdles at the National Junior Track and Field Championships in Tullamore was undeniable. With a winning time of 14.35 seconds, Sean showcased his steady progress in both the 110m and 400m hurdles, proving himself a rising star in Irish athletics. His commitment to refining his technique and speed is an inspiration to young hurdlers across the country.
September Athlete of the Month: Sinead O’Connor (Leevale AC) Sinead O’Connor rounded out the season as September’s winner with an impressive victory at the 43rd Echo-sponsored Cork Women’s Mini Marathon. Outpacing nearly 4000 participants, Sinead crossed the finish line in a swift 17 minutes and 18 seconds, setting a high standard in the competitive field. Her dedication and performance exemplify the spirit of Cork’s thriving running community.
