Athlete of the Month February 2013
Eighteen year old Luke Hickey (Leevale Athletic Club) was selected as the February winner of the Cork City Sports Athletic Person of the Month Award at foot of some outstanding walking performances. Luke struck gold in winning the National Junior 3k.Championships in Athlone and also set a new Irish record for this distance while competing in the Senior Championships at the same venue.
Last weekend Hickey won his age group at the Naumburg Festival of Race Walking in Germany in a magnificent time of 43 mins 52 sec, over two minutes inside his previous best time for the 10km.distance and well inside the qualifying time for the European Junior Championships to be held in July. No doubt his mentor Robert Heffernan should be well pleased with his protege’s progress.
