The 70th Cork City Sports was officially launched on June 11th at the River Lee Hotel by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Kieran McCarthy. This prestigious athletics meeting, set to take place on July 9th at the MTU Stadium in Bishopstown, marks a highly anticipated return after a year’s absence due to track resurfacing.
In his speech, the Lord Mayor highlighted Cork City’s dedication to promoting culture, heritage, learning, health, and wellbeing, emphasizing the city’s long-standing tradition in sports. He extended a warm welcome to all athletes, coaches, organizers, volunteers, and athletics fans, acknowledging the efforts of the dedicated organizing committee.
The event promises an exciting lineup of both Irish and international stars competing for ranking points, prize money, and qualification standards. Among the notable participants is Australian 200m champion and Diamond League winner Torri Lewis, who recently triumphed over World Champion Sha’Carri Richardson. Lewis will face tough competition from Irish 4x400m relay teammates Sophie Becker and Phil Healy, with Healy also competing in the 100m.
Other highlighted events include the women’s 800m, featuring Cork’s Louise Shanahan, and the men’s 3000m, where Darragh McIlhenny will defend his title against strong contenders. Cathal Doyle will compete in the Mile against top athletes including Nick Griggs and Cork’s own Charlie O’Donovan. Sarah Lavin aims for a sub-13 second finish in the 100m hurdles, while Eric Favors will strive for an Irish record in the shot put.
