The Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month Awards continue to celebrate outstanding athletic achievements, recognising the exceptional performances of athletes who have excelled in their respective disciplines. The awards for April, May, and June have highlighted the extraordinary talents of three remarkable athletes who have represented both their clubs and country with distinction.
Lucy Holmes of Munster Technological University (MTU) was honored as the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for April. Competing at the Irish Universities Championships in Belfast, Lucy delivered a spectacular performance, securing a double victory in both the 800m and 1500m events. Facing top-class competition in both races, Lucy triumphed with remarkable times of 2:11.7 in the 800m and 4:31.4 in the 1500m. Her impressive achievements underscore her prowess and determination, marking her as a standout athlete on the national stage.
The Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for May was awarded to Diarmuid O’Connor, representing Bandon AC and the University of Connecticut. Diarmuid made history at the Big East Conference Championships in Villanova by setting a new Irish Under 23 record in the decathlon with a staggering total of 7,610 points. This monumental achievement not only set a national record but also secured his qualification for the prestigious NCAA Championships—an accomplishment that is rarely attained by Irish athletes in this demanding multi-event discipline. Diarmuid’s performance is a testament to his versatility and dedication as an elite decathlete.
Phil Healy of Bandon AC was recognised as the Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month for June, following her remarkable contribution to the Irish 4x400m relay team at the European Championships in Rome. Phil and her teammates delivered an outstanding performance, finishing in second place and earning the silver medal. The team’s time of 3:22.71 set a new Irish record in the event, highlighting Phil’s exceptional speed and teamwork on the international stage. Her achievement in Rome solidifies her reputation as one of Ireland’s premier sprinters.
