Despite the continuing injury problems of local star Ciaran O’Lionaird who has not raced since the Penn Relays in April a really class line-up has been assembled for the Mile by organisers of the 62nd Cork City Sports at the CIT Athletic Stadium next Tuesday (6pm start).
The very much in form Paul Robinson will carry Irish hopes in the four lap classic event and the twenty two year old is reportedly targeting 3mins 53 sec with the experienced Colin Costello set to do the pacemaking role.
David McCarthy from West Waterford who has run 3:55 min.indoors is currently also in form as he showed in Dublin last weekend but the major challenge will surely come from South African champion Jerry Motsau with two wins on the European circuit since arriving in past week and the leading U.S. milers, Will Lear, Garrett Heath, Jordan McNamara, Liam Boylan-Pett, Young Australians James Kaan and Cameron Page will also have a part to play in the closing stages.
A mile race to savour.
