Fiona Everard’s expression mirrored her shock and elation when she clinched the title of Cork City Sports Athlete of the Year for 2023, a moment almost as exhilarating as her triumph in the national senior cross-country event in Kilkenny last November.
Recalling that pivotal day at Gowran, where she secured the monthly Cork City Sports Award for November, Everard, the talented athlete from Bandon, reflected on her unexpected victory. “Yes, you could say it is on par with that,” she admitted with a smile. “It was a significant moment for me.”
In a remarkable feat, Everard also seized the spotlight in April with her outstanding win in the Irish Universities 5000m, earning her a second monthly accolade. “I’m truly honored to receive this overall award, especially considering the caliber of athletics in Cork,” shared the 25-year-old. “The competition is fierce, pushing us all to strive for more. I’m grateful for the support and proud of what I’ve achieved.”
Her standout performance in November, where she dominated a challenging 9km course, marked a turning point in her career. Surging across the finish line almost 40 seconds ahead of her competitors, including the seasoned Mary Mulhare from Portlaoise, Everard stunned both herself and the spectators.
“That victory meant a lot to me and my family,” she acknowledged. “They’ve been my rock through injuries and triumphs, always there to cheer me on.” Grateful for their unwavering support, Everard also credited her coach, Matt Lockett, for his guidance and dedication.
Following her European Championships debut in Brussels, where she contributed to Ireland’s commendable eighth-place finish, Everard, currently pursuing a Masters in Biomedical Science at the University of Galway, sets her sights on the road ahead.
“As I prepare for upcoming races, including a 10km road event in March, I draw confidence from last year’s successes,” she explained. “My aim is to maintain momentum and strive for excellence.”
While Everard has conquered various distances on track and cross-country courses, she eagerly anticipates her first road race over 10km. Reflecting on her journey from injury setbacks to accolades, she embraces her transformation from an unknown runner to a celebrated athlete.
Indeed, Fiona Everard’s meteoric rise in Irish athletics epitomizes resilience, dedication, and sheer talent, making her a deserving recipient of the prestigious Cork City Sports Athlete of the Year Award.
