Olympic silver medallist from Beijing in 2008 Shericka Williams from Jamaica will face some serious Irish opposition in the women’s 400m race at the Cork City International Sports Pre-Olympic meet on Tuesday July 17th.
With four of the six-member Irish women’s 4 x 400m team confirmed as starters the race is set to be one of the highlights of the eagerly awaited event.
Joanne Cuddihy will join local girl, and Cork favourite Marian Heffernan on the line,
Jessie Barr and Catriona Cuddihy. Former winner at the sports Moushaumi Robinson from the USA is also in the race, and with such a high standard of athlete in the field the meet record of 50.81 set in 1987 by Russian Olga Bryzgina is going to be under serious threat.
The 61st sports will also feature a whole host of elite Irish athletes including Kelly Proper in the 100m, Finnuala Britton, Maria McCambridge and Cork woman Lizzie Lee in the 3km, UCC’s Orla Drumm in the mile,
“The women’s 400m race is looking like a fantastic race,” Tony O’Connell said.
“We have a fantastic field including an Olympic silver medallist, a former champion and four of the Irish squad heading to London in a few weeks time. I think the meet record will be under serious threat if we get a good night.”
The met will once again be a festival of sport. There will be a food fare for patrons who come to the CIT Athletic Stadium and that will begin at 3.30pm. The kids’ races will take place from 5.30pm until 6.30pm with the international meet starting after that and with parking spaces for more than 1,000 cars available at CIT a record crowd is expected.
