Jason Smyth the world’s fastest ever Paralympian to lead Irish charge in the men’s 100m
Four times Paralympic Champion, Jason Smyth, nicknamed the goldsmith because of the ability to win gold medals, 4 Gold Paralympic medals, 3 World records, 6 gold IPC World Championship medals, is confirmed to compete in the 100m at the 64th Cork City Sports On June 28th at the CIT Stadium.
It is seven years since Smyth made the Beijing Paralympics his own, winning a sprint double, two gold medals with world records to go with them. In London Smyth went on to defend his sprint double at the London Paralympics, again in world record times. He now looks forward to defending his titles in Rio is August.
In 2010 Smyth went where no Paralympics athlete had gone before, qualifying for the 100m at the European Athletics Championships, in Barcelona – the first Paralympics athlete to compete against the so-called fully-able. As if to prove that was no fluke, Smyth also made the semi-finals – where no Irish sprinter, fully-able or otherwise, had gone before.
Jason states that he is in the form of his life is now focused on achieving Olympic Qualification. He is excited about his return to Cork and would love to have an Irish victory at the meet and possibly an Olympic qualifying standard.
