At the forthcoming Bam Cork City Sports International Athletics meeting, which will be staged at the Cork Institute of Technology Stadium on Wednesday 14thAugust, the Women’s High Jump event is shaping up to be one of most competitive events of the meeting with the best of Irish High Jumpers taking on the best of their British counterparts. The 18 year-old Irish High Jump Champion, Sommer Lecky, who set a personal best of 1.90 metres to capture the silver medal at last year’s World Under 20 Championships in the High Jump, competes against Great Britain’s 22-year old, Morgan Lake, reigning British Champion, who has jumped 1.97m both indoors and outdoors in the last twelve months. Lake is also a frequent Diamond League competitor.
Morgan Lake (born 12 May 1997) is the 2014 World Junior champion and the 2015 European Junior Champion in the high jump.
Others in the field include Lavern Spencer from St Lucia, currently on the Diamond League circuit, Liz Patterson and Amina Smith from USA, Priscilla Frederick from Antigua and Barbuda, Bethan Partridge and Emily Borthwick both in the top five in Great Britain. All these athletes have jumped close to or in excess of 1.90m. The meet record is 1.92m set by Amy Acuff in 2007. Who would bet against that record being obliterated on August 14th?
