The 1964 Olympic 5000m champion, Bob Schul, is likely to attend the Cork City Sports on 8th July.
Schul is the only US athlete to win a 5000m Olympic gold medal and is regarded as one of its greatest ever distance runners. Coached by the famed Hungarian Mihaly Igloi the Ohio born Schul was endowed with one of the greatest finishing kicks ever seen at this distance. His last lap acceleration was never more appreciated by his loving American fans than his last lap of the Tokyo Olympics where he covered the final 300m in a astonishing 37.8 secs to outkick his great French rival, Micheal Jazy.
Now a fit 76, Bob Schul, posted best times of 3:40.7 for 1500m, 3;58.9 for the mile, 5:10.2 for 2000m, 8:26.7 for 2 miles, 13:10.4 for 3 miles and 13:38.0 for 5000m. It should be borne in mind that these times were all set on cinder tracks.
