Young South African Wayde van Nierkerk is set to challenge world class 400m field at the city sports. Having dominated the junior realm of South African athletics, this 21-year-old sensation is set to make his presence felt in the senior divisions from this year.
According to Van Niekerk, his inspiration is not drawn from a single source. He said he tries to emulate and incorporate many different qualities of some of the world’s best athletes.
“I cannot pinpoint a particular role model for myself because I learn from a number of different athletes. For instance, I take Usain Bolt’s confidence; Asafa Powell’s humbleness, and Tyson Gay’s fighting spirit and I apply it to my life.”
Van Niekerk will find stiff competition from Irelands Brian Gregan, who had a decisive victory at the European Team Championships in Santry last weekend.
Strong competition will alos come from the USA team of Kind Butler, Quentin Inglehart-Summers & Robert Simmons.
