The 71st Cork City Sports International Athletics Meet, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze series, delivered an unforgettable evening of elite competition and crowd-pleasing performances at the MTU Arena on Wednesday, July 9th.
In front of an energetic home crowd and a global livestream audience, the event lived up to its billing, producing three meet records and a number of standout performances.
Nicola Tuthill Delivers a Home Victory
Irish hammer throw star Nicola Tuthill brought the house down with a commanding win in the women’s hammer. The Bandon AC athlete, competing in front of family and supporters, showed her international class to secure a memorable victory and underline her growing status on the global stage.
Coby Hilton Retains 100m Title
Sprinter Coby Hilton returned to Cork with unfinished business—and delivered. The British athlete successfully defended his 100m title in a closely contested final, edging a high-quality field and demonstrating consistency and top-end speed when it mattered most.
Meet Records Fall in Style
Three events saw long-standing meet records tumble, showcasing the exceptional talent on display:
- Women’s 300m: The rarely run distance produced fireworks as the athletes blazed down the back straight and powered through to the finish in record time. Megan Keith (GBR), Meet Record 8:38.37
- Men’s 800m: A thrilling two-lap battle saw a lightning-fast pace from the gun, with the winner smashing the previous meet best. Henry Jonas (GBR) Meet Record 1:45.25
- Men’s 3000m: In the final distance event of the night, the race unfolded perfectly for fast times—and the athletes delivered, culminating in a new record that brought the crowd to its feet. Henry Mcluckie (GBR) Meet Record 7:36.81
Athlete of the Meet – Megan Keith
The standout performance of the evening came from Megan Keith, who delivered a breathtaking run in the women’s 3000m. In a historic moment, the Scottish athlete broke the 23-year-old meet record previously held by Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan, stopping the clock in an outstanding time of 8:38.37 that confirmed her rising star status in international athletics. Megan’s poise, pace, and strength over the final laps earned her the well-deserved title of Athlete of the Meet.
