While many of the record breaking performances at the 62nd Cork City Sports were set by overseas competitors, the new generation of talented up and coming Irish athletes certainly rose to the occasion and many achieved personal bests and excelled in the heat of elite competition.
Nineteen year old Sarah Lavin from Limerick again broke Derval O’Rourke’s national junior record with a swift 13.36 secs. behind the world ranked Kristi Castlin of the USA.
Clonmel’s Sean Tobin knocked a sensational 14 secs off his previous best when recording 4mins 06.66 secs for the mile and his ambition of becoming the country’s youngest four minute miler moved a stage nearer.
Finally, the previously unheralded Linzi Herron from Lagan Valley jumped a lifetime best of 6.13m against a slight headwind to defeat a good international field in the Long Jump.
